Background & Introduction

Muslims living in the west have always been concerned about their children's education. The state education system, in its very nature, is unable to meet the educational, cultural and religious needs of Muslim children in Britain.

To ensure that Muslim children grow up with some understanding of their religious values and beliefs, parents organise evening classes. These classes often take place in the local Mosques, community centres and increasingly at home. The value and importance of these classes are paramount and indisputable; however, children's achievements are often questionable.

Young children are very eager to learn about their true identity; they have an innate craving for Islamic education. Yet, these various evening classes are unable to meet their need, and provide Islamic education, that is stimulating and challenging. Children's achievement in terms of Islamic knowledge after attending such classes for a number of years is often negligible. Some of the main factors for this apparent underachievement could be that:
  • children often attend these classes when they are exhausted and tired (after mainstream school);
  • many of the teachers do not have qualifications or knowledge and understanding of teaching and learning;
  • the methods employed are such that active children become passive learners;
  • there is a severe lacking of vital resources;
  • there is a communication gap between many of the teachers and the children, mainly because of the language barriers but more importantly in terms of the teaching methods and styles, and;
  • the classes mainly concentrate on the reading of the Qur'an, and has no structured teaching of other vital aspects of 'Deen' or 'Islamic Education'.
There could be many other reasons too. To ensure children receive good Islamic education, it is vital that the above issues are carefully studied and appropriate solutions are found. The solutions need to work around the mainstream education system because many parents want state education but at the same time desire an Islamic education for their children.

    Never have I witnessed such sincere hospitality and overwhelming spirit of true brotherhood as is practiced by people of all colors and races here in this ancient Holy Land, the home of Abraham, Muhammad and all the other Prophets of the Holy Scriptures. For the past week, I have been utterly speechless and spellbound by the graciousness I see displayed all around me by people of all colors.
