Young Muslim Organisation UK
Despite all its apparent material and economic achievements, society is now more than ever groping with immorality and social bankruptcy. Muslims living in Britain, particularly the youth are confronted by many challenges ranging from drug abuse, family breakdowns, racism, and crime, to institutional Islamaphobia and Identity Crisis. We are living in an age characterised by individualism, social alienation and turbulence. Since September 11 2001, the world has changed. In this new and changed climate the challenges faced by Muslims have, if anything intensified.
In October 1978 young Muslim men gathered in a house in London to bring together a dynamic band of youth who would respond to the challenges faced by their community with deep faith, true commitment and a positive and comprehensive work plan. They believed that this was the way to success, to preserve and strengthen Muslim identity in Britain, and contribute to the global Islamic Movement whose aim is to direct the Islamic process of social change. Thus was the Young Muslim Organisation UK (YMO UK) born!
Since its inception, YMO UK has been tirelessly working towards this noble aim, the sincere struggle for which-by the grace and mercy of Allah - will ultimately earn Allah's good pleasure. Remaining alive in the hearts, minds and souls of many of the youth in Britain, YMO UK's goals can be divided into three categories; Invitation (Dawah), Organisation (Jama'ah) and Education and Purification (Tarbiyyah wa Tazkiyyah).
Invitation: Dawah
Dawah is an essential component of YMO UK's work; indeed it is essential to the Islamic tradition. It is vital simply because without being actively engaged in inviting people to Islam, social change based on Islam cannot be accomplished.
YMO UK strives to ensure that its Dawah is comprehensive as well as suited for the specific circumstances of the youth in different parts of Britain. The School Link Project (SLP) and the College Link Project (CLP) working in schools and further/higher educational institutions respectively, organise a wide range of activities from seminars and awards ceremonies to camps and sports activities. Parallel to dawah work in educational institutions, the YMO UK Community Teams work in neighbourhoods and residential areas across Britain, encouraging the youth to commit their lives to Islam and contribute positively to their society and community.
The techniques and medium of dawah may differ from one place to another but the aim is always the same - to help liberate individuals from wrong influences, injustices and oppression and prepare them spiritually, physically and intellectually to be part of the forthcoming change based on Islam.
Organisation: Jama'ah
Building an organised, god- conscious and disciplined movement was a major component of the work of all the Prophets of Allah, including Muhammad. Thus, once an individual accepts the Dawah of YMO UK and passionately and sincerely agree with its aims and objectives he is invited to join hands with his fellow brothers.
It is our belief that organised collective action; for the sake of Islam is a duty and a necessity. Islam calls for (Jama'ah) organised and collective work and opposes isolation - Allah's hand is with the Jama'ah. It is only the stray and isolated sheep that the wolf attacks!
"Truly Allah loves those who fight in His Cause in ranks, as if they were a solid cemented structure" (As-Saff: 4)
Organised collective action should be based on a responsible leadership, a solid foundation and clear perceptions. Brothers in YMO UK should act like bricks in a building, one strengthening and supporting the other. Co-operating in righteousness and piety is one of the obligations of Islam, and the mutual teaching of truth and patience is one of the conditions of success in this life and the hereafter.
Education & Purification: Tarbiyyah Wa Tazkiyyah
Once a member of YMO UK, it is the responsibility of each and every brother to educate and train himself with all that is necessary in order to help the cause of Islam, contribute to the Islamic change of society and above all to emulate the role of the Companions of the Prophet in our times. This is the meaning of Tarbiyyah. Tazkiyyah means purification and refers to the cleansing of the human self from all that is undesirable and unwholesome. It also refers to the nurturing and strengthening of all the qualities that are essential for growth and development in the sight of Allah.
The first and foremost quality that Tarbiyyah and Tazkiyyah should inculcate in any worker of the Islamic Movement according to the noble Shaykh Yusuf Al-Qaradawi is "Iman, by which I mean the Iman of the Quran and Sunnah; the Iman that has over seventy branches of values and morals, the Iman on which volumes have been written. Iman does not come about by wish or by pretence, it is what settles in the heart and is proven by action."
The perfection of Iman is a life long exercise, Tarbiyyah and Tazkiyyah which are tools used for this exercise is the personal responsibility of each and every individual, however YMO UK's Tarbiyyah department organise and facilitate many initiatives in order to help and encourage brothers along their personal paths. Weekly Dars, Monthly Training sessions, Halaqas, Qiyamul Layl, Tajweed classes, Fiqh sessions, Arabic classes, National Training camps, One-to-ones etc. are all mediums through which YMO UK encourage brothers to take personal responsibility in improving and bettering themselves. Another vital component of YMO UK's Tarbiyyah programmes is to prepare its workers - theoretically and practically - with the appropriate tools to respond to the reality of their circumstances (Fiqh al waqi) with wisdom, clarity and leadership.
Through Dawah, Jama'ah, Tarbiyyah and Tazkiyyah YMO UK wishes to produce true believers, the likes of the Ansar of Madinah and Muhajiroon from Makkah, who will Love and support Allah and Allah in turn will Love and support them.
This is, in short an introduction to the work of YMO UK, perhaps the best way to find out about YMO UK is to see it in action: changing peoples lives, giving them hope and a reason to wake up in the mornings, instilling in them the sweetness of Iman and the hue of Brotherhood and implanting in them the spirit of struggle and patience. Our motto, "Together towards Paradise" can only materialise if we believe with certainty that "Our Struggle Must Go On".

Never have I witnessed such sincere hospitality and overwhelming spirit of true brotherhood as is practiced by people of all colors and races here in this ancient Holy Land, the home of Abraham, Muhammad and all the other Prophets of the Holy Scriptures. For the past week, I have been utterly speechless and spellbound by the graciousness I see displayed all around me by people of all colors.
